Woodstock Musical Theatre Company announces the cast and staff for their April 2006 production, SWEET CHARITY, to be performed at the Woodstock Opera House.   

April 7 - 30, 2006

“Sweet Charity,” a Musical comedy by Neil Simon, Dorothy Fields and Cy Coleman to be performed at the Woodstock Opera House four weekends, with 14 total performances.  Produced under license from Tams-Whitmark Musical Library Inc.., NYC, NY.

Have you ever known a girl who wanted something so badly, that she tried too hard to get it? Meet Charity, the girl who wants to be loved so much, that she has lost sight of who she is. Charity sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through romances with the "animal magnetism" hero, the "ultra-chic continental" hero, and the "impossible-to believe-but-he's-better than nothing" type hero. Her world is the all too real world of Times Square, and the people who pass through her world are as deceptively charming a group as ever swept across any stage. From her cynical, hard-core trio of girlfriends at the dance hall, to the phony evangelist, the Coney Island "fun people", the Central Park "strollers" and the YMHA "self-improvers," every character is interesting. This is a bright and sophisticated show in every sense. Cy Coleman has captured the rhythms and sounds, and Dorothy Fields the vernacular and fun of New York. It's a comedy in every sense of the word. Neil Simon has a particular talent for looking at the truly amusing side of life. It's a dancing show too, with great opportunity for use of dramatic movement. Wonderful musical numbers include Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, Too Many Tomorrows, There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This, I'm a Brass Band and Baby, Dream Your Dream.

The Broadway musical Sweet Charity will be presented by the Woodstock Musical Theatre Company April 7 – 30, 2006 at the historic Woodstock Opera House.

Sweet Charity is a tender, poignant and consistently funny look at the misadventures, in the ways of love encountered by the gullible and guileless lady known as Charity Hope Valentine. Charity is a dance hall hostess who always gives her heart and her dreams to the wrong man. The original Broadway production was nominated for 12 Tony awards and Bob Fosse took home the trophy for best choreography. Sweet Charity is known for the hit songs "Big Spender" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" the book was written by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields.

The WMTC production is being artistically directed by Timothy R. Curtis , musically directed by Virginia Zymonas and choreographed by David “Doc” Lindquist.  After 8+ years in the Woodstock Theatre Scene - Kim Scharlow of Woodstock stars as Charity, with supporting actors Jeff Cook of McHenry as Oscar and Corey M. Keane of McHenry as Vittorio Vidal.

The Sweet Charity cast features Laura Anderson (Woodstock), Ellen Bellairs (Woodstock), Brooke Burlingame (Harvard), Beth Davis Johnson (Woodstock), Jeff English (Crystal Lake), Jennifer Ericksen (Richmond) Eric Field (Woodstock), Sandy Griffith (Woodstock), Bridget Kuehnert (Woodstock), Angelo Spicuzza (Woodstock), Katelin Stock (Woodstock), Sheri Storer (Elgin), Barbara Tipton (Woodstock), and Jen Weidman (Palatine).

Sweet Charity will be performed at the Historic Woodstock Opera House April 7 – 30, 2006. Sweet says it all for 'Sweet Charity' Woodstock Independent - April 12, 2006 By LISA KELLY It's fitting that "Sweet Charity" opened at the Opera House this spring because it is definitely a breath of fresh air. It takes place in New York City in the '60s and has all the flavor of that time. For those of you old enough to remember, it is reminiscent of the "Laugh-In" television show in more than one way. Charity Hope Valentine, an eternal optimist in her constant search for true love, is a hostess at the Fan-Dango Ballroom. Again, for you younger folk, this is a place where men came to pay to dance with women who put their self-esteem on the auction block every night. Possibly due to her choice of employment, Charity's has been an unrewarding quest as she has repeatedly given her heart to the wrong men, but she never gives up. She continues to kiss frogs in search of Prince Charming. Kim Scharlow plays Charity and convincingly radiates innocence in a world that contrives to keep her down. She has a lovely voice and does justice to the great musical score. Everyone knows "If My Friends Could See Me Now." Choreographed by assistant choreographer Bridget Kuehnert, it's excellent. Trying alternately to enlighten and protect Charity are her fellow dance-hall hostesses. All of them are wonderful, but her primary support comes from Helene (Ellen Bellairs) and Nickie (Barbara Tipton). They are a little more savvy and more in touch with reality but appreciate Charity's rose-colored glasses. Their risque but lovable characters and exceptional performance abilities are especially well showcased in the numbers "Baby Dream Your Dream" and "Big Spender." The men in the cast, although none fulfills Charity's fairy tale expectations, have a solid presence, too. Corey M. Keane plays both Vittorio Vidal and Daddy Brubeck. In both, he demonstrates a magnificent voice. Jeff Cook, in the role of Oscar of the incredibly cold feet, also gives an outstanding vocal performance. The entire ensemble contributes to this fine effort. They are spectacular in "Rich Man's Frug" at the Pompeii Club and the street scene "Rhythm of Life." These two dance numbers are amazingly choreographed by David J. Lindquist. The quietest character is the young woman who again harking back to "Laugh-In" carries the cards cuing the audience. This clever technique is augmented by other signage that makes sure the audience is keeping up. The '60s inspired costumes were just plain fun, and the somewhat Spartan set was very effective. I especially liked the elevator and the Ferris wheel. The lighting helped in creating these difficult venues. The only opening-night glitch seemed to be some sound system problems. The orchestra was excellent and not overpowering in any way, but the projection on some of the vocal numbers was spotty. It is to be assumed that this slight technical difficulty will be remedied for future productions. In the spirit of the play's lead character, Woodstock Musical Theatre Company's "Sweet Charity" is a treat. For tickets or information, call the Woodstock Opera House at 338-5300.
