STORY SYNOPSIS
As the house
opens, Pump Boys Jim, Eddie, Jackson and L.M. come out on stage to tune
their instruments. Besides being 'Pump Boys', they are actors, singers,
dancers and musicians. While they are busy tuning and chatting, the
Dinettes, Prudie and Rhetta, are preparing their Diner for opening and
have a little chat with the incoming curius audience. Once when
everybody is seated, the show can begin.
Pump Boys and Dinettes -- A Rock 'n Roll - Country &
Blues Musical Revue -- is the sort of show that feeds off the energy and
pleasure of its audience, celebrating life and love in a small, southern
town.
Half of the clever setting is a country diner out on
Highway 57, somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, and the other half
is a gas station, meant to be located on the other side of the highway.
Its characters are four guys who pump gas, and two gals, the Cupp
sisters, waitress/proprietors of the Double Cupp Diner across the
highway. These are six relentlessly cheerful people out to have a good
time.
One of the unique and exticing aspects of the show is
the fact that the audience is an integral part of the action. For
instance, the characters hold a raffle or lottery where one of the
audience members actually goes home with a prize, and one lucky guy gets
serenaded with a love song.
Though there is a slight plot and a certain inner
logic, it's really just a chance for these 6 performers to see that the
audience has a good time through song, dance and generally carrying on
with country - flavored music and inventive, numerous lyrics.
lt doesn't take tong, once the show begins, to find
yourself laughing along with these characters and their boundless
enthusiasm for life.

Woodstock Independent - Entertainment Section
'Pump Boys and Dinettes': a rollicking
good time
By LISA KELLY
Submitted: April 3, 2007 11:02 AM CT
Fantastic vocal and dance numbers make this musical revue a good time
for all.
When "Pump Boys and Dinettes" blew into town last weekend, it took the
audience on a great ride offering something for everyone. What a
rollicking good time.
It's hard to describe this production. It has very little dialogue and
doesn't tell a very complicated story. It includes fantastic vocal and
dance numbers, but it's not a musical in the classic sense. I guess it's
a musical revue, but it had just enough character depth for me to think
of it more like an opera that refuses to take itself seriously.
The clever set has Highway 57 running down the middle heading for the
world beyond and straddled by the Double Cupp Café and the Pump Boys'
Service Station. It is located "somewhere between Frog Level and
Smyrna."
The dinettes, sisters Prudie and Rhetta Cupp, played by Christy Johanson
and Carol Calzaretta, respectively, work hard at their diner. The pump
boys, Jim, played by Paul Crane; Jackson, played by M. Christopher
Stevens; and LM, played by John Cook — not so much. They have a relaxed
work and business ethic at best.
But all of them sure can sing and dance. It would be hard to pick a
favorite number because they are all good and so varied. "Pump Boys"
offers gospel, country, rock, poignant ballads and barbershop.
Accompaniment ranges from a live backstage band or a single guitar to
none at all.
This talented quintet does everything with ease and superb timing. And
the fact that they are obviously having such a good time is infectious
for the audience. There are lots of good healthy belly laughs on this
journey.
Absolutely everything works. The show moves very, very quickly and runs
less than two hours, but every minute is packed with great
entertainment. I have to admit, however, to being genuinely sorry when
the "OPEN" sign flipped to "CLOSED," and the lights went out.
Director Bob Wilbrandt and the Woodstock Musical Theatre Company can be
very proud of this production. It rocks — and rolls and swings and
tickles. It's just good fun. It will run weekends until April 22 at the
Woodstock Opera House.
